Your Driver’s License Might Not Be Enough to Fly After May 7

Starting May 7, 2025, anyone traveling by air within the United States will need to show a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card, or another form of ID that is approved by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

On the same date, a REAL ID or other approved form of identification will also be required to enter certain federal buildings and nuclear power plants.

REAL ID cards are typically marked with a star in the top corner, which indicates that they meet federal security standards. Design details may vary depending on the state.

If you don’t have a REAL ID yet and plan to fly or visit secure federal sites, it’s important to apply for one soon. Check with your state’s DMV or licensing agency to find out how to upgrade your ID.
